The Theory Test

The Part 1 test is in two parts. The first part is a touch screen multiple choice theoretical test. This consists of 100 questions. You are allowed 90 minutes to answer the questions. The second part is a computer based hazard perception test which must be taken at the same time as the theory test. The hazard perception test is a 15 minute test of 14 film clips designed to test your ability to react to potential hazards.

The theory test consists of four bands, which are as follows:

Band 1.

Road procedure (25 questions)

Traffic signs and signals (5 questions)
Car control (10 questions)
Pedestrians (5 questions)
Mechanics (5 questions)

 
 
 

Band 3.

Driving test (10 questions)
Disabilities (5 questions)
Law (10 questions)

 
 

Band 4.

Publications (10 questions)
Instructional techniques (15 questions)

 

This part of the qualifying examination can be taken as many times as you need. The pass mark for the theory element is 85, but you must score a pass of at least 80 in each of the four bands. The pass mark for the HPT element is 57 out of a possible 75.
