DRIVING INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

Qualifying requirements

To give instruction paid for by a pupil, the law states that your name must be on the register of Approved Driving Instructors or you hold a Trainee licence issued by the registrar.

To qualify for entry on to the register you must:

  1. Have held a full licence for at least four years preceding application.
  2. Have not been disqualified from driving during the four years preceding application.
  3. Be a fit and proper person (no criminal convictions).
  4. Read a vehicle registration plate from a distance of 90 feet (27.5metres).
  5. Pass the qualifying examinations.

The qualifying examination to enter on to the register is in three parts and you must pass each one before you can take the next one. All three parts must be passed within two years of passing the first one.
